CTC VISTA Project

What's New?

[3/31/05] We're pleased to inform you that the CTC VISTA project will be operating in the 2005-06 program year and want to let you know about some of the changes in our program for the coming year.

To summarize the changes (and note the new application and reporting requirements with the Corporation for National Service), we are moving from a project that presents itself as a resource to help build the capacity of CTCs and related organizations in a direction solely of their own choosing to one in which applicant organizations are required to address one of the Project's four priority areas:

  • community networking
  • community organizing and development
  • technology support to non-profit organizations
  • digital media support programs for youth

The project will develop resources and curriculum to support, learn from, and teach best practices in these arenas.

A full statement of the 2005-'06 Project Basics can be found at www.cpcs.umb.edu/vista/projectbasics.htm.

In addition to having these project priority areas, applicant organizations should be aware that there is a more complicated application and reporting process that is noted in the project basics.

As a result of these changes, we anticipate that while many existing CTCNet affiliates will continue to apply, the challenge of meeting new programmatic and application/reporting requirements may well discourage some. On the other hand, because of the new priority areas, we anticipate a growth in applications from a wider range of organizations that are not currently CTCNet members.

Your comments and questions are most welcome and encouraged. Interested CTCs and related organizations can begin this process by sending a brief overview of your organization and what you would like your VISTA(s) to do to the Project's Assistant Director Paul Hansen at paul.hansen@umb.edu. We're looking forward to hearing from you.

[1/24/05] The new "Community Technology Review," published in collaboration with the CTC VISTA Project, is now available at www.comtechreview.org. This issue features stories on the VISTAs working with One Economy/the Beehive in NYC; the AmeriCorps members involved with the Community Technology Empowerment Project in Minneapolis-St. Paul; technology center-library partnerships by Ohio Community Computing Center Network VISTA Leader Gabe Gloden; and an update on the CTC VISTA project by Assistant CTR Editor and project VISTA Leader Daniel Schackman. AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps*VISTA project stories are given special priority in selecting material for the Review.
[1/23/05] We have two new VISTAs!

Shannon McCue will be working at UMass Boston primarily supporting the students of the College of Public and Community Service's Community Media & Technology program. She comes to UMB with valuable experience in video editing from Malden Access Television. The UMass staff are very glad to have her!

Christy Park will be working with HOME Inc. on their efforts to engage Boston youth in various forms of digital media creation. Christy was an Americorps member working at the Children's Museum of Providence before she ventured north to Boston. She studied Media Art & Design at James Madison University — that's in Virginia! Welcome aboard Christy!
